i care: I care because I am armenian and I am a human.
We are living outside our land and our country, we are always foriegn where we live. Most of Armenians are living outside Armenia, Why?
The Ottoman turkish government killed armenian people and put them out of there homeland and the world is still rehusing to recognize the biggest genocide in the 20 century.

i care: I care because 1.5 million of my people were massacred. These people did not bother anyone. They were innocent souls that had no reason to die. These people did not even have any intentions or even the means of hurting anyone else. This inhumane act, the genocide of 1915 commited by the dirty Turks should be recognized. This evil act, intended to erase the Armenians off the face of this earth was not successful. However the attemp was very tragic. Therefore, the notorious organizers of this genocide should pay for their wrongdoing.

i care: I care about the Armenian Genocide because my race was put to torture. The innocent lives of our great-grandparents, our grand parents, parents, children and friends were taken from them. 1.5 million people lost their lives because of a government that wanted to erase Armenians off the surface of the earth. I care because we were tortured but we still survived and we continue to rise. I should never be ashamed of being Armenian because I am a proud Armenian girl and I will never forget what happened to us in the past.
I care because it was my past.
I care because it is my future yet to come
I care because it's my pride and also...
I care because I am Armenian!

i care: Words from the heart... by Hrachya Balmanukyan
1915
I care, my brothers and sister care
Every breathing Armenian cares.
Why you ask, it's not a secret
Lives were lost, and were sacred
A generation evaporated but no one cared.
'Tis the bloody date we all regret
'Tis our ugly fate that got us afraid
'Tis what broke the backbone of our faith
"No more" we shout, "no more denial"
No more keeping quiet, hiding the ugly truth
We shall show the world so blind
What the ugly Turk has done to us
There is no excuse for Genocide
Only hatred and selfishness comes to mind
As the word is finally spoken, "Genocide"
1915 Never Again, Turkey will pay, I swear my life on it! |

i care: April 24
With my family I walked into a big place
Filled with so many Armenians, there was no space
Good-bye to my father he left on a trip I was told
"Mother why are you crying? Is our house being sold?"
"No son, don't worry, we will go back soon."
And as my eyes shut, my mother whispered "Anoush Koun"
Next day I woke up, my mother too was gone
That's when I realized it was the Summer Without a Dawn
For a piece of bread I had to work
For the rest of my life I woud stay scarred
To survive in this genocide I had to be brave
It was hard watching my people die without a grave
These memories are perminant and my heart is still sore
All because of April 24 |

| i care: There has never been a more horrific act committed against the Armenian people than the Genocide of 1915. Whether you agree or disagree with the intentions behind it, we can all agree that it was a heinous act of primitive violence. It is difficult to comprehend how a 20th century nation, that thinks of itself as "civilized," could ever commit such an act. As the great writer William Saroyan once said, "We are a nation of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose literature is unread and prayers are no longer answered..." But we are still Armenians, we are still here- and I for one know that I will never be silenced, never miss a Genocide commemoration, never REST- until the souls and memories of the 1.5 million Armenians murdered can peacefully rest. Recognition and Remembrance are the only ways that these battered and forgotten people will ever get their day of justice. Victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, as well as victims of countless other genocides across the world, you are in our thoughts and prayers...don't worry, you have not been forgotten. |

i care: Dear friends.
Exactly 40 days ago, we lost a mother. My Mother, eternally closed her eyes, at noon, on January 14, on the historic Armenian New Year's Day, in Heliopolis, Egypt. My two sisters, Sirvart and Armine were with her, soon joined by Sirvart's children, my cousin Berge and wife Sona and family. From Los Angeles, I was able to follow part of last right's service by phone. Describing my mother's last facial expression, Sona said; "Shad kohounag oo khaghagh ardahaidootiamp devav eer herajeshde", (with gratitude and peaceful calmness she gave her farewell). She was buried in The Armenian Cemetery in Heliopolis, in her favorite dress, a gift of my brother; holding in her hands a khachkar, (Cross Stone), that my cousin Berge brought from Armenia last September.
We also lost, another survivor of The Armenian Genocide, the living witnesses of a failed attempt of a crime against humanity, the heroic generation, that against all odds, over the last 90 years, survived, produced and nourished us.
Today, 40 days later, we are here for her memory, and with this "hokejash" to "Celebrate Her Life". A life, that at best had a very sketchy beginning. My mother never knew who her parents were and when exactly she was born. No names, no documents, no trace of her coming to this earth. What she knew and told me was what her "saviors", the missionaries who named her Araxy, told her.
It was unfortunate that because of her long term poor health, she was unable to travel and meet you all. With your permission I will attempt to present her through my personal prism.
I estimate that she must have been a few months old when she was miraculously found, meticulously wrapped in baby clothing, the way a mother would do, and placed behind a tree covered with shrubs and leaves. I would venture and speculate that her parents, sensing the eventuality of their tragic destiny, hid her, to spare her from the same barbaric end, preferring her to die in the heart of mother nature. She was told that they found her in the Kharpert region. According to missionary memoirs and historians of the period, the mass deportations of the Armenians of the area started in late June and went through the first two weeks of July in 1915. Hence, my best guess is that, she must have been around 89 years old. This baby, like many others, through the German missionary network, survived and a few years later found herself in an orphanage in Antelias, today's Lebanon.
Soon after the end of the First World War, in late 1918, this 4 years old young girl, was moved to Greece, where there was an established orphanage with a school for Armenian orphans. At around age of 9/10, she was scheduled to be sent to America, when one of her teachers suggests that Egypt will be a better destination for her, were there were good schools for her to get an education. I estimate that around 1923/24 she landed in Port Said, and soon after she was in Cairo at a girls orphanage.
In those days, the orphans were taught Armenian and a trade. My mother ended up in the sewing school. One of her instructors, Digeen Eugenie, who apparently was a well know wedding gown specialist, almost adopted her; taught her the skills of pattern making and sewing, in her salon. As a child, I remember very vividly some of the beautiful wedding gowns that she worked on. I probably touched those gowns way before their respective brides and grooms did.
In 1939, through one of her fellow workers at the salon, my future aunt, also named Araxy, she met my father Manoug, and soon after they were married. She had 4 children, myself, my sister Sirvart, brother Varoujan/Marcus, and sister Armine. In her young age, this mother of four, was widowed, and the whole responsibility and the care of the family fell on her shoulders. Not quite a teenager yet, I could see and feel how hard she struggled to survive and take care of her children.
With all these daily difficulties, she always found time for her lifelong passion, reading. She read the Armenian Bible "the mother of all translations", and the literature of our giants, Mashdots, Khorenatsi, Nareg, Shnorhali, and from more recent times, Apovian, Baronian, Dzerents, Medzarents, Varoujan, just to name a few, cover to cover, over and over again, through her 90 years. She also read our history, specially the early years of the 20th century, with her heroes like Antranig, and as she read, she would often pause and sing the songs dedicated to them, as if to communicate with them and signal that she survived and with her readings, she was keeping their memory alive.
Looking back, I cannot help but think that, probably throughout her life, through her readings and prayers, she was looking for the answer to the question that she had to God. How could The Armenian Nation, with her Golden Literature as proof to unquestionable commitment to God, be subjected to the biggest crime of humanity? I hope that now in heaven and closer to God, she was able to ask that question directly and received the answer, the answer that eluded her for a life time.
Looking forward, every year, on April 24, as we commemorate the loss of over one and a half million victims of the Disaster, let us also memorialize this heroic generation, that after dutifully completing their missions on earth, now they are joining their parents in heaven, the parents, that most of them did not even know.
As for today, my mother is looking down on us, with great satisfaction that this hokejash, The Celebration Of Her Life, was held in this cultural center, named after one of her literary heroes, Raffi. Special thanks to the Board of Directors for making this "sanctuary" available for her.
Later, when this Celebration will be over and we depart, she will turn her eyes over to Mount Ararad and Armenia, the Historic Armenia. Her lifelong dream was to visit her roots, but unfortunately her physical condition did not allow her. But now with a full view from the theatre of heavens, spread in front of her is the Stage, her Armenia, our Armenia, from Kharpert to Artsakh, from Ani to Dikranagerd. She will continue to read our history and sing our songs, waiting for the day, that, in the words of the poet, dedicated to salty Lake Van's Yearning, ... "Vaneh Intckan Taghtsod Menah, Your Sevanin Mishd Miyana....and goes on ... " Yes Gesbassem Tegooz Tarer, Took Shadatsek Hezoratsek, Veratartsek Zis Der Ganknek" ... and finally, "Tchoors Kharnek Mer Sevanin, Vor Yes Tarnam Nera Hamin". (Lake Van yearns to join Lake Sevan..... I will wait for you, even for centuries.......Mix my water with Sevan Lake's, so that my taste will change to Her's...). Van's yearning was the yearning of my mother's generation...
Before ending, my mother would have liked for me to thank my two sisters, Armine and saintly Sirvart, who for the last quarter century, dedicated her life for the well being of our mother.
And now, I would like to thank my unparalleled wife Juliette for everything that she did for the last thirty plus years for my mother, for the last 40 days, and for all the logistics of today.
On behalf of the Chenian families spread over three continents, I thank you all for coming today to share our "Celebration Of A Life". And all of us for our collective loved ones, lets remember the words of another poet, "...Yete Hishadags Tarami, Akh Ayn Aden Yes Ge Mernem", "... If my memory fades, alas that’s when I die".
And finally, please allow me for all our departed loved ones, to wish in Armenian, "Hoghe Veraneen tetev Ella, Yev Asdvadz Hokineen Loossavore", (let the soil be light on her and God bless her soul). And I would like to conclude with my mothers very last words before her ascend to heaven, witnessed by my sisters, "Havadk, Hooys, Ser, Yev Khaghaghootiun", Faith, Hope, Love and Peace.
God Bless Us All. |

i care: Dear Sir or Madam:
My name is Mehmet Deviren, and I am a Turkish citizen. My late grand mother was an Armenian but this was kept a secret from my sisters and I until one nasty argument between my mother and father, which she ended up calling my father “ son of an Armenian b…. ”. My mother was not a naturally nasty person but she was ignorant about what had had happened in 1915. In that she was not alone. 99% of the nation was with her. The remaining 1% knew the truth but it had not suited them, it still does not. We were told to hate evil Armenians by the state and why would any body should or dare to change that!
When I confronted my mother on what she had said to my father I was given a very economical explanation (in fact I do believe that was all she knew about the subject), that my paternal great grand father and his brothers were involved in killing many Armenians near the Murad River in ongoing hostilities against the Armenians by the Turkish army and local militia. After they had executed their orders they returned to their village together with three little Armenian sisters whose parents had been killed by the very same men. As you know these atrocities had happened in many other places across the country. Those young girls all over the country rescued by men like my ancestors either by due to a limited humanity they had sustained or fore a more sinister and perverted reasons. In due time the three sisters had married to the sons of the brothers. My grand mother was the youngest of the three sisters.
I have also learnt from my grand father some details of his father’s and his uncles’ so called holly duties. Those poor people had been hand tied to one another and told “Murad Baba (father Murad) is waiting for you” before they were taken to a river to be thrown in, their hands were still tied in order to save bullets. There was no remorse what so ever in his words.
My grand mother and her sisters were all criticised to hold conversations in an unknown language by us, and especially my grand mother not to shed tears in times of family tragedies. She was branded a heartless woman by most of the family. Who would have guessed that she ran out of tears at the age of four when she had being forced to watch all her loved ones slaughtered.
Years went by and all the things I have heard about what had happened to the Armenians faded away due to the fact that they had been contradicted with what I had been taught in our history lesson at school. According to our schoolbooks it was the Armenians who had murdered the innocent Turks and they were continuing to do so under the name of ASALA. Surely all these books and teachers and journalists and statesmen could not be wrong. And who was I or any one else to suspect them. Didn’t they warn us against these lies, which were spread by the enemies of our country to undermine our sovereignty?
In mid eighties I moved to UK and started a job, which involved in many trips to south east of Anatolia. During some of these trips I met elderly local people (most of them were Kurds) and one way or another without any political purpose the subject turned into what had happened in 1915. What I was hearing collaborated with my childhood memories about my grandmother and every thing I have had heard from my grandfather, ect. Everywhere I went, there was a sad story and some concrete evidences to back them up. I will not repeat to you what you already know of. Yet these unexpected revelations have started to haunt me.
I had always some suspicions of the concepts of the state regulated history books and disbelief towards our politicians, however the truth was too hard to digest.
On my last trip to the region I went to a village near the city of Diyarbakir in order to hold a report about forced relocation of the villagers to a nearby town to stop their possible support to the separatist terrorist fighters. They had been given a little bit more than a week to evacuate their homes by the state and almost all of the villagers were against it. But they were powerless and desperate to stay in the land, which they all lived in for many generations. I shall never forget the painful words of one very old man to me “son we have taken this land from the Armenians, we built our lives on their tears and blood and now we are leaving this land behind amid our tears and blood on it.”
When I saw my sisters again I told them about what I had learnt and their response was total disbelief. Their explanation for what I said was that I living in UK and working for a foreign organisation corrupted my senses. Basically according to them I was poisoned by foreign powers, which wanted to divide up our beloved country. Had I not heard that before!
I was told to shut up and not to repeat that to any one else for my sake as well as theirs. But how could I? It was like being a witness to a terrible crime and not to come forward. Now I know the truth and the truth was too painful to keep silent. Yes I was Turkish and I always loved my country but I was also a human and being a human carries certain responsibilities.
I told the same story to some of my friends and the result was almost similar plus I have lost some of their trust and friendship for good.
I had also written letters to some of the Turkish Newspapers and in return I have received either an insult or no response at all.
Today my dear grandmother and her sisters are long gone. So I do not have the opportunity to tell her how sorry I am for what happened to her and her nation or try to share her pain and sorrow, which I believe she had carried with her until the day she died. According to my religion once the soul leaves the body, forgives every wrong doings and every injustice. My ancestors who had committed these atrocities will be answering to their creator, may God show mercy on their souls.
But the earth belongs to the living and I for one beg of your forgiveness for all the pain that my ancestors had caused to your nation. Yes there was a war in 1915 and the politicians of both sides had made mistakes, but nothing can justify for the massacre of the innocent civilians.
One day I hope my beloved country will accept these historic facts and let the truth set them free.

Our main issue today is, that the Turkish government hasn't got the courage to give up for what his done and the ridiculous thing is, USA is supporting him!
If we go deep back in the history, the Turks' ancestor was Chingis Khan. We all know he had the aim to conquer the world. But how? There was no modern technology at that time. The only way was shedding blood!!! And this have taken the Turks as a sample, in which they practiced on us!
I want to make a progression on making the world recognize our Genocide!!!! No matter how!!!

i care: I care about the Armenian Genocide because it is my duty not only as an Armenian-American, but as a compassionate human being.
I care because apathy on my part would be just as repulsive as denial by the Ottoman Empire.

i care: All Armenians need to open their eyes and see how important it is to have the armenian gencoide recognized. Dont turn away do not try to neglect it. Do not ignore reality. The armenian genocide still continues oday because the denial continues. So open your eyes and look . We need to live our lives with an open mind and see the difference.

i care: My name is Lilit Hakhpandyan and this is why I care about the Armenian Genocide.
First of all, how is a question like asked? How can you NOT care? How can you not care about your own RACE, your own PEOPLE, LOVED ONES, OUR OWN BLOOD being demenished? Our people were killed, slaughtered, beaten to death and buried alive! 1.5 million of our people GONE. How can such a great massacre occur and go by unrecognized? Why are children education about every other genocide or massacre in school and not the Armenian Genocide of 1915? Are we not human beings? Do we not breath? Do we not have feelings for our race? The cowardly Turks killed MY people, OUR people, took our land, money and belongings, and DENIED the whole act. Why should they get away with it? Our race shall not go by unrecognized and the Turks shall pay back. We shall take our revenge from the Turks so that those 1.5 million souls can rest in peace...

i care: I am a half british, half Armenian male who considers himself a quality soul. An artistic, happy, man who likes to smile. I feel saddened to learn of such violence in such recent history, but what is new. Sometimes i wonder if we are only animals after all. But then I think of love, which is beyond violence and hatred, because it will allways live on in other people. Like me and all the other armenians who share a wish for the attrocity to be recognised and rectified in some way. I was formerly a Galoustian.

i care: I care because years after the genocide the cruelty continued during the present Turkish rule and these actions have not been published or brought to peoples attention .These actions include the preparation for a second genocide in World War II ,what was called the " Varlik Vergisi",where everything you owned was taken from you and the cruelties of 6th April in Istanbul which was supposedly anti Cyprus.
People who ignore the facts of so many years ago as they were old history and during the Ottoman Empire ,are ignorant of the facts that have been continuing since because we have not been painting a fuller picture.

i care: Humanity is beginning to lose itself among people, and has been for a long time. The Armenian Genocide matters in so many ways. To look at it from an inhumane way, the genocide is apart of the world's history. Without it, some historian may find him/herself stumped on a puzzle in history. Unable to figure it out, perhaps they would put something totally wrong in the place of where it should be, just for a place holder. Yet, that place holder could become common belief through the years. We must protect our history.
To look at it in a humane way, it was wrong! Evil, you could say. Almost annihilating an entire race, that perhaps is the second worst thing you can do, after totally annihilating an entire race. Torturing purest of heart, tormenting laughs and actions, how to you excuse this? You cannot! Marched for months across land, only to go to desert, which holds only a fool's hope!! Shot. Raped. Hanged. Beaten. Murdered!!! No one was spared humiliation, no one was shown mercy from the soldiers. Admitted, some Turks found a heart, and helped the some Armenians escape, but we're looking at the leaders, not individual actions.
Even though I myself am not Armenian, even though I'm but a 13 year old, even though I'm a woman (which would matter if you happened to be chauvinistic), I still have a heart. Where has the compassion gone in fellow man? Where is the truth? We all live on this earth TOGETHER. Bringing hardship upon another nation only brings hardship upon yourself. Remember that we share this earth....... remember that we are all human.

i care: I care about the Armenian Genocide because if I don't, who's to say another will? If I do not care about the mass murders that took place, the inhumane acts of hate, the torturous grief millions of people suffered and still continue to suffer; then who is to say anyone else will? Who will give me the guarantee that if this human refuses to care, then another human will?
I care because to this day, we Armenians suffer. I care about the memory of the 1.5 million that died. I care for those who survived only to realize they were without a parent, a sibling, or a relative. I care for these acts of travesty are still unrecognized by government entities to this day.
I care because it is just.
I care because it is undeniable.
I care because I am a human being.
I care because to not care about a genocide would be a greater crime than that of the genocide itself.

i care: I care about the Armenian Genocide because my race was put to torture. The innocent lives of our great-grandparents, our grand parents, parents, children and friends were taken from them. 1.5 million people lost their lives because of a government that wanted to erase Armenians off the surface of the earth. I care because we were tortured but we still survived and we continue to rise. I should never be ashamed of being Armenian because I am a proud Armenian and I will never forget what happened to us in the past.
I care because it was my past.
I care because it is my future yet to come
I care because it's my pride and also...
I care because I am Armenian!

i care: Even though I am only 14, I really do care about the Genocide of 1915. I feel that Armenians today are responsible of preserving their pride and identity. Being an Armenian is what I do, I couldn't imagine being French or Italian. The Armenian Genocide put our country and ancestors in deep trouble, but that wasn't enough. We will always work to get more people informed on the facts of the Armenian Genocide. For example: more than 1.5 million Armenians were tortured and massacred. The Turkish Government denies that fact, although they know that it is true indeed! We will work to try to get Turkey to admit to that, and most importantly, we won't give up!
